Julie of the Wolves – About the Author

Jean Craighead George was born in July 1919 and died in May 2012. She was a writer of children’s books and won several awards for her books such as the Newbery Medal for Julie of the Wolves. Jean Craighead George’s family were naturalists and she also loved nature. Therefore her main topic in her books is nature. George was really interested in animals and learned a lot about wolves. She went to the Naval Arctic Research Laboratory in Barrow, Alaska to get to know more about wolves and was able to speak the wolves’ language there. A lot of experiences she made during her journey, for example, she met a little girl and an alpha wolf, had a big influence on her book Julie of the Wolves. As readers were yearning for a sequel of the story Julie of the Wolves, she wrote Julie and Julie’s Wolf Pack.
